Last Thursday, November 6th, the Viri Dei club of St. Dominic faced off against the seminarians of Kendrick-Glennon at St. Dominic in a charity soccer game. In a blowout win, the seminarians took the win over the St. Dominic upperclassmen with the score of 7-2. With the game being for charity, the entry fee to attend was at least one canned food item that was to be donated after the match.
“It was amazing playing and knowing it was for a good cause made it even better and I know the event helped a lot of people,” senior Dylan Dawson said.
With the game being only a fun match, there were many people on both teams that have never played soccer before, like Dylan Dawson. Dawson, along with Jack Thompson and many other seniors, has never played a competitive soccer game before, but they were very excited to cheer on the team throughout the game. Even with their loss in the match, they still had a great time trying something new, while also doing it for a good cause for the local community.
“I’ve never donated that much food before, it was very meaningful to give back to people that needed the food due to the SNAP benefits not going through recently, and the church needed to step up during those hard times,” teacher Mr. Bone said.
Viri Dei donated all of the entry fee canned goods to the local food bank of Immaculate Conception of Dardenne Parish. As an added benefit, students who attended the game during the first half got a dress down day on Friday, November 7th, for showing support for Viri Dei and ICD food bank.
This game was something that Viri Dei and the seminarians trained hard for, but all of it was for the fun of getting together and doing a good deed for the local food bank. A trunk load of canned food was donated following the game, Mr. Bone added that his truck was squatted down due to the weight of the food. Thank you all for attending the game and supporting Viri Dei and donating for a great cause.
