The Annual 83rd Golden Globes were hosted January 11th by Nikki Glasser. Names such as Michelle Williams, Ricky Gervais, and Amy Poehler all went home with the coveted golden trophy for their roles in various categories.
Host Nikki Glaser was back to host the show for the second time in a row. At the pre-show, she revealed that this year, she was not going to be holding back on her jokes, and in the first ten minutes, she proved it. From remarks about how the Warner Brothers being sold to jokes about different celebrities’ personal lives, to how heavy censorship has been in film across America lately, Glaser proved that she was not scared to receive any backlash for the jokes.
Glaser’s opening monologue was just the start of the night. Stars then came to the stage to receive the awards that they had all worked so hard to earn. One of those stars just so happened to be 16 year old Owen Cooper, winning for his work in Adolescence. This made him the youngest recipient of the “Best Supporting Male Actor” award. The show itself also won the award of “Best Television, Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television,” being featured only on Netflix with one season.
“What started off as what I thought was, you know, I might be okay at, I might be awful at, I never know. So I took a risk and I went to drama classes. It was embarrassing, but, you know, I got through it,” Cooper said, remarking on how crazy it was to him to be winning this award at such a young age.
Other winners of the night included Timothée Chalamet who won “Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” for his work in Marty Supreme. It was arguably a very hard competition in the category, with Chalamet going up against other stars such as Ethan Hawke, George Clooney, and Leonardo Dicaprio. Winning this made it Chalamet’s fifth “Golden Globe.”
Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has had for different kids across the world, it makes sense that it would go home with some award. Song-writer, Ejae, for the song “Golden” came up to accept the award for “Best Original Song – Motion Picture” and director, Chris Appelhans, came up for the award of “Best Motion Picture – Animated.” This is not the first of the movie receiving praise as the song “Golden” was on Billboard’s charts for over five weeks, and the actual movie itself consistently at number one on Netflix for the same duration.
Awards season has only just started. Expect to see more award shows such as the Grammy’s on Sunday, February 1st, where Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber will fight it out to see who could take home album of the year.
