To start off the second semester, the house system is having a stained glass window competition. This competition embodies the pillar of community as everyone is able to contribute to their house’s stained glass window. During family time different families are able to help decorate their window.
“Being able to act with kids you don’t normally get to see everyday during your family time makes competitions like stained glass a special part of the house system,” House Caritas HOH Madeline Wagner said.
Unlike some competitions like nitro ball or gaga ball, stained glass is not an athletic activity. The stained glass window competition allows people that are artistic and creative to excel in this competition. Their ability to draw beautiful art can help their house earn points.
”We try to find competitions that apply to as wide a group as possible. This one specifically applies to organized leaders and artistic endeavored kids,” Mr. Tock said.
The windows are looked at for neatness, creativity, clean designs and a pleasing look to them. Whichever house does the best will be the winner of this competition and will get 20 points. These points can be a game changer when all the points are tallied up.
Although this is a competition, it is much more than that. It is a time for St. Dominic to be a community, many new connections are made through hard work in this competition. Six different houses battling it out for a win, but at the end of the day, it is a community of people working together.
“Most everything we do is mainly focused on community. Most of what we are trying to do is make students feel welcomed and appreciated and to interact with other students who they may not necessarily have opportunities to socialize with,” Mr. Tock said.
This competition didn’t dissapoint as House Temperentia took first overall. All the students that worked on the windows did a great job and their work is much appreciated by St. Dominic. To view their hard work go across from the learning commons to see the stained glass windows.
