Girls golf makes school history by bringing home state championship

The girls golf team competed in the Class 3 State Championship earlier this week, and for the first time in school history, came home with a State Championship win. Five incredibly talented girls swung their way to victory in Farmington, through hard work, dedication, and ambition.

Junior Annabelle Bush, worked hard throughout the season, and was the leading scorer with an impressive score of 75, on Tuesday. With such a low score, this helped the team to continue with a huge lead. She also had a strong Monday score through extraordinary putts, with a score of 81. Annabelle was the lead girl for her team, with a total score of 156, and individually medaled 14th. Great work Annabelle!

“Tuesday was a very different day for me. Normally I’m nervous on the first tee, but I just went out and did my thing. After the front nine, I knew that my score was going to be low. My only thought was on the shot that I had in front of me and my strategy for the hole,” Bush said.

Isabelle Daniels led the team on Monday, with a phenomenal score of 78. Daniel’s finished 15th individually right behind Annabelle Bush, and second in the St. Dominic team. Isabelle had great drives, and chips with an extraordinary birdie day one, on hole six. She also had a nice round on Tuesday, with a score of 80, and overall tallied 158 points.

Coming in third in team rankings, is Sophomore Lily Seydel, with an outstanding overall score of 164. Lily shot a 75 on Tuesday, which is insane because she dropped 14 shots from her Monday score which was an 89. Lily is an all around player, with powerful drives, and beautiful chips.

“On Tuesday, I felt I had to stay focused even though we had a lead, I knew other people could still come back. The best memory was when we received the trophy and we were all screaming and our coach was crying because he had never won such a huge thing before,” Seydel said.

Assistant Coach Arell, is extremely proud of the work the whole team put in, throughout the season. He loved to see the team with such confidence on Tuesday, after having a rough start on Monday. With having a lead going into Tuesday, he felt the team could relax on the tee, which is what made their lead skyrocket on day two.

“I am so proud of all our girls. They work so hard on their craft, and deal with so much mentally on a daily basis, with everything that goes into being a successful student athlete. Our girls battled through and came out the other side state champions and that banner will fly forever,” Coach Arell said.

Freshman Sophia Bezdek shot an 84 in round one and an 88 in round 2. That is a very impressive accomplishment, as a freshman. All of the girls contributed to the success of the team. The first round the team total was 332, however day two went smoother, with a team total of 318. Senior Caitlyn Kennedy, put in the dedication for her last ever high school match, by dropping six shots between day one and day two.

Senior Caitlyn Kennedy, Junior Annabelle Bush, Sophomores Lily Seydel, Isabella Daniel, and Freshman Sophie Bezdek, all have something to be very proud of. They all made school history together, and their banner will forever hang in the rafters at St. Dominic High School. Congratulations on the huge accomplishment!
