Player to Watch: Kelsey Kunz

Kelsey leads the Crusaders from the circle and the plate.
Kelsey leads the Crusaders from the circle and the plate.

Kelsey Kunz, St. Dominic junior, has been a starter on the softball team since freshman year. Her top-notch abilities have led her to many achievements these last few years.

As a freshman on the varsity squad, Kelsey had plenty of nerves. These feelings were quickly resolved through the welcoming community that the softball program has to offer. Her exciting experience on varsity as a freshman has helped her form special bonds with upperclassmen and introduced her to a school family right from the start.

“The thing I love the most about softball is how it’s a team sport, and you have to have a competitive drive to win,” Kunz said.

Kelsey has been playing softball since she was four. Her knowledge of the game is impeccable and her ability to lead her team to victory will be most useful throughout this season. Last year the girls were able to secure the conference title, but unfortunately, they fell to the tough Timberland High School team, in districts. Kelsey is anticipating avenging her team this season.

“I plan on leading my team this year by being an example, picking each other up, and always working hard during practices,” Kunz said.

Now a junior, Kelsey looks forward to spending time playing with the new faces added to the team. She intends to help grow this team in every way possible, so that they can strive to achieve their goals together. She believes the most challenging part of this upcoming season will be facing Borgia and Timberland again.

Along with St. Dominic, Kelsey also plays club softball team for Top Gun National. Here she helped her team make it to 12th in the nation this past year. Kelsey plans to continue this string of achievements by playing in college as well. The schools she is interested in include Rockhurst or SEMO. She plans on studying nursing in college as well.

First things first though, and that means that Kelsey wants to help her team accomplish many proud moments throughout the season. With a current average of .459 and 15 RBI on the season, we would say she’s well on her way. Make sure to come out and see Kelsey spin it this season. A great day to mark your calendars and do this is September 21 against Borgia as it is a house attendance event.
