St. Dominic prides itself on its student leadership. Two of the most sought after positions, Peer Ministry and Head Of House were up for application this past week. The students taking up these positions were informed this past Friday and are now ready to prepare and step up to the challenges they offer.
The position of Head Of House is very exclusive with only 12 students holding the position in total with one boy and one girl heading each one of the six houses. One of the students selected for the role is Ace Armstrong, formally a member of house dignitas and now will be moving to house temperentia to lead them on the path to a house cup.
“I’m very excited to be the head of house for temperentia, I’ve always seen the passion from the members of their house and I’m anticipating seeing it on their side. I believe I have the skills that will make us a stronger house and also hopefully bring us a house cup championship,” junior Ace Armstrong said.
House Gaudium is yet to win their first house cup, often sitting near the bottom of the standings, but with new leadership they believe they will be able to come together as a house and rise to the top, claiming their first house cup. They believe current juniors Mitchell Begley and Mattie Howell will help accomplish that task for them.
“I’ve loved to be in house Gaudium since I was first put into the house as a freshmen, unfortunately we haven’t been very successful in my years participating and we are still looking for our first trophy. That’s why I am excited to become head of house in order to try and make a difference and bring us glory in the house competition,” junior Mitchell Begley said.
Peer Ministry is another exclusive leadership role at st.dominic. Over 150 juniors apply for the role every year, and only a few are selected for interview, and then an even smaller few are actually selected for the role. Peer ministry is typically a group of about 25 or so juniors spread evenly among boys and girls, this group of seniors are responsible for being role models of the school and the faith. A designated responsibility they have is to attend various retreats for other students year round and help lead them best to the faith.
“I’ve always wanted to be a peer minister, so I was very relieved to hear that I was selected for the position and would get the opportunity to help out others. I believe my ability to relate to others and get on their level will make me successful as a peer minister,” junior Tanner Hirtz said.
”I had always thought about potentially being a peer minister, but I think my experience on my kairos retreat this year really influenced my decision and pushed me to apply. I have really enjoyed my retreats at St. Dominic and enjoyed just talking to various current peer ministers around school, so I want to follow in their footsteps and create a greater experience for those to follow me,” junior Dom Palo said.
These newly selected leaders will help to continue the path St.Dominic has built upon its faith, community, and service. These soon to be seniors know what it is like to have been a part of this school community and will take the responsibility to ensure that it continues to grow in the right direction.
