The time for St. Dominic’s annual Penny Wars is rapidly approaching, sparking levels of both excitement and anticipation. The first event will be held at the boy’s varsity baseball game on March 30th, while the second event will take place during empower hour and family time on March 31st. This competition is an amazing tradition where students bring in all of their coins to win points for their house and support all of St. Dominic’s philanthropies.
Penny wars don’t just involve pennies, but all types of coins and dollars. Each type serves as a different contributor, with all pennies gaining positive points for your house. All of the other coins and dollars are considered as negative. These negative coins can be put in the opposing houses’ bucket, subtracting their amount of points. The house with the highest amount of points in the end wins.
The kickoff for the competition is on Monday, March 30th at the boy’s varsity baseball game. During this event, all types of coins and dollars will count as positive points towards your house. The winning house of the evening can gain 12 points to their house total, giving them a boost to win the cup. This Penny War donation night is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a St. Dominic baseball game and help your house start off strong with a huge amount of points.
“I am so happy that a Penny War event is happening at the baseball game. I get the chance to help my house and watch the game at the same time,” junior Ella Robson said.
The second event will take place during empower hour on March 31st. Both positive and negative points will be involved, providing the chance to sabotage other houses. Students are welcome to come to the atrium and give their coins to contribute. The house who will win on this day will gain 30 points, making it a vital opportunity for success.
Penny Wars are not just a competition for house points, but a way to support those we represent. All profits will be split among St. Dominic’s three philanthropies: L’arche, Habitat for Humanity, and Amigos for Christ. Service is one of St. Dominic’s pillars, and the Penny Wars serve as an amazing chance to be a part of something bigger.
“I am so happy that by giving money to this competition, I am helping out our philanthropies,” junior Rachel Ferranto said.
St. Dominic’s Penny Wars is a great competition that is both amusing and heartwarming. The first day serves as a positive-points-only event, while the second day allows for students to disrupt other houses. Make sure to contribute to these events, because it benefits both your house and community.
