The 2026 World Baseball Classic began on March 5th with South Korea defeating Cezhica. Excitement has been building ever since the last installment of the event, which was a huge success. The World Baseball Classic has only been thought of as an exhibition event, rather than a true competition to prove the best nation. For that reason, many star players used to sit out of the event to prevent injury.
”The tournament is far too close to the start of the MLB season, so I get why players are prioritizing the teams that pay their salaries over a preseason tournament,” junior Grant Giesmann said.
However, the 2023 event was different, star players gave the tournament a chance. With top competition at the event many most players bought in fully with many of them saying they cared about it more than a World Series.
The tournament included many memorable moments, like Trea Turner’s grand slam to take the lead vs Venezuela. However, the most memorable moment was the ending, where MLB teammates and captains for their respective countries. Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout faced off in the final at bat, where Ohtani would strike out Trout to claim the WBC title for Japan.
Due to the heartbreak they suffered, USA is looking for redemption in this year’s event, with yet another star studded roster led by captain Aaron Judge. A topic of controversy for fans was the removal of Mike Trout from the team after repeated injuries and the steady decline of his overall play.
The United States came into the tournament as the favorites overall, but there are several nations not far behind. Japan is the reigning champs and are still led by the best player in the world Shohei Ohtani. The Dominican Republic is a powerhouse and is led by exciting players like Fernando Tatis Jr and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Surprising to some the small island of Puerto Rico is undefeated early on and is led by strong pitching and the MVP runner up to Shohei Ohtani in 2024, Francisco Lindor.
This year’s tournament has not disappointed so far, bringing much of the passion and excitement back from the 2023 tournament. Unfortunately USA suffered their first loss of the tournament in a shocking 8-6 defeat against Italy, they now no longer control their destiny in advancing and need Italy to help them by defeating Mexico. If the Americans are able to advance, the American fans believe they have what it takes to get the job done.
