This week, the St. Dominic community is challenged to support their school pillar of service and live out Jesus’s call to love your neighbor by raising awareness and support for the nonprofit organization Amigos for Christ.
St. Dominic High School divides its students into six communities known as houses. These houses pair together to support a specific charity. Houses Dignitas and Temperentia sponsor Amigos for Christ.
“Amigos for Christ… facilitates leadership, water, health, education, and economic development in rural Nicaraguan communities,” the Amigos for Christ website says.
Houses Dignitas and Temperentia listened to a presentation on Monday about Amigos for Christ and the big week ahead. The hope is that they got the word out about the philanthropy’s promotional activities this week to their friends in other houses. Social media is being used in conjunction to distribute the message. All the houses are invited to come together to contribute to something bigger than themselves.
On Wednesday, students were encouraged to bring their water in something other than a water bottle or cup for “Anything but a Cup Day.” Prizes were awarded to a student from each grade level for their creative non-cup water holder.
“That’s to raise awareness of how blessed we are to have drinking water. … I’m 13 steps away from a drinking water fountain, and depending on where you’re at on Earth, it could be a two hour walk to get fresh water. You’re getting it from a well that is not clean and has… stuff that’s going to get you sick, so we have it so good, and we don’t know it,” Assistant Principal for Student Life Mr. Tock said.
Thursday was declared “Skip Starbies Day.” Students were challenged to forgo their Starbucks and instead donate the money they would spend there that day. This money will go towards financing an indoor restroom in Chinendegas, Nicaragua.
“It humbles you to know the small ways you can make a change in somebody’s life. It’s a small thing to get a Starbucks in our everyday life, but if we can just give that up for a day, we can make a big change in their life,” Temperentia Philanthropy Captain Callie Knott said.
To wrap up the philanthropy week, Dignitas and Temperentia will celebrate with food and a block party during family time. Bracelets made by the children in Chinendegas are being sold throughout this week as well for five dollars. The profit will be donated to Amigos for Christ. Please consider supporting this worthy cause.
