We all enjoy spending time with our friends, going out to eat, watching a movie, or even just talking to them. Time with friends is very beneficial to mental and social health. But when it comes to the classroom, is being in the same classes with your friends beneficial to your learning, or is it a distraction that can bring you down?
The main skill when it comes to learning most sufficiently is being able to pay attention to your instructor. This is the main argument against being with friends in class. When alone, there isn’t anything to distract you from the teacher’s words and the lesson being taught. However, when with friends it can be easy to get distracted and lose track of the lesson.
Having a friend in class can definitely be beneficial, especially when it comes to group projects. Students will work better in groups if they are with their friends, as they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, making delegating work easier. Another benefit could be if a student misses a class or doesn’t fully understand a concept, but they have a friend in the class, they will be able to just go to them for the information they missed or a touch up on the concept.
”I think if you are sitting right next to your friend, no work is getting done. But if you are sitting in the same area as them, it can make class more enjoyable while still being able to understand what’s going on,junior ,” junior Tyson Greiner said.
A key part to friends being able to succeed in class together is instructors being able to recognize who are friends in the class and seating them and managing them properly. If teachers are able to manage close friends in class together it can make the teaching more successful for them and everyone in the class.
While it may not always help students focus in class, having a friend that makes the class enjoyable, can be a huge positive as sometimes. It’ll help the student retain the information if they are in a more positive mindset and maybe even look forward to going to that class if they know they’ll enjoy their time. Thus creating a better, more positive, learning environment.
Having friends in class can create distractions and disruptions, but with the right learning environment and the help of good discipline friends can be beneficial. The good outweighs the bad and gives the students a better chance of learning concepts. Overall, having friends in a class creates a better classroom experience.
