This week’s athlete of the week showcases a swim athlete whose discipline, grit, and leadership has made a significant impact on the St. Dominic girls swim program. Audrey Meyer has been super consistent when demonstrating a commitment to excel, both during practices and meets. She is a very valuable member of the team and is always going above and beyond for her team. Her leadership is very much recognized by her teammates and her coaches.
“Audrey is a really cool athlete. She is one who came out freshman year, and I saw a spark of talent in her instantly. She had so much going for her and her work ethic is really what sets her apart, because she constantly pushes herself to be the best,” Coach Honerkamp said.
Meyer exemplifies what it really means to be a true team leader. She provides such natural talent that allows her to excel more than just in the pool. Meyer is very well balanced and she is just such a calming presence for her teammates to rely on. Mentally, you have to stay positive and pace yourself to not face burnout. Her leadership is beyond words, because she is constantly staying positive to persevere and try to better herself along the way.
“I believe Audrey is a natural born leader, because when she gets to the pool she means business and constantly works hard,” Coach Boyle said.
Swimming is a sport that takes a lot of practice and time to become successful. There is a lot of training required to grow as an athlete and it isn’t easy. To become the best athlete you can be, you have to be coachable, dedicated, and positive. Although there will be struggles and sometimes struggling helps push you to become a better athlete and person in general. Team sports are very difficult, especially swimming because it depends on how good you do individually to help your team succeed.
“My biggest motivation is just going and trying to cut time every time and my parents supporting me in my goals,” junior Audrey Meyer said.
Being named athlete of the week is a huge honor and accomplishment, because it means the athletes dedication and work ethic isn’t going unnoticed. Meyer’s continued improvement and commitment is only going to make her a better athlete in the long run. Her positive influence on the team and in the program is something that makes the team so close. As the season continues on and the team is looking to get to state, Meyer is only going to become more dedicated. This team is something special, because of the athletes, like Audrey Meyer, continuously pushing and encouraging her teammates day-by-day to become the best athletes they can be.
