After the start of the new year, students across the country have to make the return back to school after the long holiday break. Typically, students return to some new classes and a great load of homework. After getting so used to the long break and not having anything to do, it can be hard for students to get back into the groove of things and stay motivated to do their school work.
One of the most common tactics used by students and even adults with working jobs is the “reward system.” The person will typically set a goal of completing some portion of work, and when they complete it, they will reward themselves with something, whether it is a break, snack, or anything else that can give their mind a break for some time. The reward system has worked well for many students, however the biggest struggle with this tactic is staying motivated to come back to work after achieving the first goal.
Since the days are running long and close together, it is important for students to not have school work be the most important focus of the day. It is recommended that when students come home from school, they take about an hour or so to keep up with hygiene, eat, and just take a break from their responsibilities. Good things to practice could be yoga or meditation in order to help keep the mind empty and focused. When things get too overwhelming, it is important for students, and even adults, to come home to a calm and quiet environment to help them stay grounded in their work and lives.
Another tactic is for the student to give their phone to their parents until they can prove that all their work is finished. This method is less common as it decreases the freedom of giving oneself a break or the ability to get lost and distracted while doing work. It may seem hard for some at first to give up something that many can be entertained by for such a time, however it will be worth it for the reward of having more free time after completing their work.
The “Pomodoro Technique” recently went viral on TikTok. This method consists of working for thirty minutes straight and after giving yourself a five to ten minute break to do anything. After that, the person is to start the cycle over again until the work is completed. For students who find it hard to stay concentrated, this method might be the best as it almost tricks the brain into thinking it is working for a short amount of time with the promise of a reward.
It is hard for students to get back into the habit of being productive, however getting into a study routine can help students achieve more free time as well as better time management that will be helpful in other branches of life. Good luck in the new semester!
