St. Louis University men’s soccer has advanced to the elite eight in the NCAA Tournament. Upset after upset SLU is defining all odds to becoming one of the best Cinderella stories in the men’s soccer tournament this season. Becoming only one of two unseeded teams to make it this far. With their best win of the tournament being over six seed Indiana, they push forward to see if they can beat everybody.
“I watched their last game, it was so electric, watching them go back and forth like that. Shootouts were so good too with so many clutch shots and saves” junior Mitchell Begley said.
SLU defeated Bryant University in upset fashion in the Sweet 16. Winning in penalty kick shootouts 3-2 after tying the match 2-2. Defender Quinten Blair scored both of SLU’s goals in regulation with being a key factor of SLUs success so far this NCAA tournament. With forward Theo Franca being the team’s leading goal scorer, still showing up and out every day as one of the team’s best performers this season. Their goalie Jeremi Abonnel had two key saves to get them that win in shootouts over Bryant.
“It has been really fun watching them play this season, I really hope they win it all, they definitely deserve it,” junior Chase Morris said.
With their regular season 8-5-8 record they went into the tournament being heavily slept on. Being a first round exit in almost everybody’s guesses. SLU is one of the best Cinderella runs along with Washington in the tournament, both being in the elite eight right now. With having two upsets over Indiana and going into double overtime versus Kentucky in the first round also.
SLU is wanting to keep their pace, facing off against 14 seeded Akron on December 6th in the elite eight. All fans are hoping our local team can keep on with one of their most convincing runs in modern time to win a national championship.
