Nick Brettelle, St. Dominic Varsity Hockey player, has been a huge addition to the Varsity Hockey team this year. Brettelle has been delivering a performance that strikes the attention of everyone around, as it lifts the entire team and makes the game more engaging. Brettelle is a transfer student, so this is his first year on the team. He has shown what it’s like to be a true team player and he really wants what is best for the team.
“My coach really helps put me on lines with my teammates that fit my game the best and who I can rebound off of as well. In practice, we always go over the plan for the day, and in practice we talked about plays we use in games and communicate well through that,” junior Nick Brettelle said.
What truly separates Brettelle from the rest of the team is his preparation before the game. He is a constant force on the team that really unites them together. His calm demeanor and intensity drive the team towards the common goal, to win the game. Even beyond the dedicated practice time, he is constantly putting in the work to become an all-around star. His accountability and dedication is noticed by everyone around him and he shows true dedication to the team.
“He is such an inspiration and I’ve been so grateful to play with him this season,” junior Aidan Freeman said.
With the season starting to heat up, Brettelle isn’t going to slow down. He is showing that the potential of the team is only going to get better. As the team is preparing to face some tough competition, they are going to need to rely on Nick Brettelle’s steady presence and his competitive nature to carry them throughout the season. Brettelle shows so much talent, grit, and dedication to learning new things he needs to work on to continue his dedication towards the team.
“When the game is tied with only a few minutes left, people would mistake me to be nervous or stressed out in the situation, but really it’s the complete opposite. I feel a wave of calmness and poise under pressure and I feel like the game is in the palm of my hand. I try to slow the game down in my mind and see the whole sheet of ice and think about what the other players are going to do wrong and how I can execute on their mistakes,” junior Nick Brettelle said.
During a tough matchup, the confidence Nick Brettelle displays is unmatched, making many teams eager to find people like Brettelle. His dedication in pushing himself and his teammates to be the best they can possibly be. Brettelle is the true definition of a team-player, which is why he’s hockey athlete of the week.
