There is a lot of commotion around decorating for Christmas, but when is it actually acceptable? Some people think that it’s okay to decorate November 1st, but others think that decorating has to wait until after Thanksgiving. For most people, their timing comes back to family traditions and when they decorated growing up. People frequently put up some of their decorations right after Halloween and wait to put up their lights outside, but others think that everything has to wait.
“Christmas decorations affect my holiday spirit, because most people are just so eager for Christmas to come, so decorating before Thanksgiving keeps people jolly throughout the month of November while waiting for Christmas,” junior Peyton Roberts said.
People who decorate early constantly defend themselves saying that it’s just to spread joy. After all, everyone always loves the cozy vibe of the Christmas season and all of the joy the decorations bring. The world is so stressful, so by putting up decorations early it puts people in a good mood. Decorating is a big debate every year, so it brings a lot of emotions to the holiday season. There is no official day that decorating needs to begin, but it all depends on family traditions when people grew up decorating.
“There is nothing like sitting next to the tree and fire with all of the decorations set up to start the holiday season,” Mrs. Liszewski said.
There are some people who prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving to start decorating. They think that if people rush into Christmas too fast it will take away the magic of the holiday season. When people wait until late November to decorate, they argue that it keeps Christmas feeling special and makes it much more enjoyable. The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, is when people think it’s okay to start decorating and transitioning into winter.
“When people wait to decorate, I think it destroys the excitement leading up to Christmas, because then if people decorate in December, they are behind on the fun traditions like advent calendars,” junior Peyton Roberts said.
In reality, there is no set date for when Christmas decorations need to be set up, so it’s all based on people’s preference on when they want to decorate. Whether someone decorates November 1st or December 1st, it’s all based on traditions and their preference. Christmas is all about joy and celebrating Jesus, so decorating is just a fun side thing to do to make the holiday season more special. The holiday season moves very quickly, so by starting early it makes it feel like this time of year doesn’t go as fast. In the end, there is no right or wrong answer on when people should decorate for Christmas.
