St. Dominic football started off the season with a huge win over St. Charles West. It was a dominating 51-7 win. St. Dominic has beaten West the past six times they have matched up.
“I think just being able to execute in all three phases of the game. I know our passing game obviously got a lot of notoriety and they played exceptionally and that was the linemen, the backs, blocks and receivers making good catches,” head football coach Blake Markway said.
St. Charles West started out the scoring, but after that it was all St. Dominic. St. Dominic scored 51 unanswered points. The players and coaches did a lot of preparation for the first game of the season, which overall paid off when they got the win.
“When we got the Jamboree film, that’s really all you can go off of a week one game, because you don’t have any other information on the other team. So they actually changed all the formations that they ran from the previous seven years. So we thought we were all ready to go coming into the Saturday before the game. And then all of a sudden we get the Jamboree film and everything’s a little bit different. But our team did a really good job of understanding that they were still running the same plays, they were just running them from a different look,” head football coach Blake Markway said.
The quarterback Brennan Czeschin had a historic passing night for the Crusaders. He passed for 333 yards and six touchdowns, which is the single game passing touchdown record for St. Dominic. His two favorite receivers of the night were Coleman Murchison and Austin Ryan. Both of them getting over 100 receiving yards.
With the blowout win, the backups were able to get in the game and showcase their skills. Backup quarterback Jaxson Czerniewski had his first varsity touchdown. Many juniors also got in the game and were able to get their first varsity game reps. The team showed that every player on the team can play at the varsity level.
“It was nice to see all those next guys after the starters go in and still do well, so I’m really excited to see how the season goes,” junior Jackson Finklang said.
Hopefully the Crusaders can keep up their hot streak. They play Normandy at home for their next game. It will be a highly anticipated game for Crusader fans because it is the first home game of the season. Let’s see if the football team will be able to top their performance from last game.
