Parrots are uncommon pets, but can be just as lovable.

There is an endless amount of pets to choose from in life, but which one is the best? Besides traditional pets such as dogs and cats there are many other unique options. From snakes to birds, here are the top 5 best pets that are practical for your everyday life.

  1. Ferrets

Ferrets are a great choice for a pet because of their playful yet easy to manage behavior. Ferrets sleep on average 15 hours a day, but when they are awake they love to play and spend time with their caretakers. They are also easy to take care of and clean up after, but it is recommended that they have someone to play with due to their sociable nature.

  1. Birds

There are many options for birds such as parakeets and parrots. While both are great options, they both are pretty different. Birds are vocal animals, and parakeets chirp while parrots are much louder. They can even mimic sounds and words that they hear. Birds are easy to take care of and entertaining to listen to, but if you don’t like noisy animals they might not be the best choice.

  1. Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are very cute animals, but they require patience and time to get comfortable with their owners. Just like any other animal, they might be shy or cautious while getting to know their new surroundings. Unlike other animals, they have quills that they will prick you with if they feel uneasy or nervous. When owners advance past that first stage, hedgehogs are very loving and enjoy spending time with everyone.

  1. Snakes

While many people have a fear of snakes, they can actually make good pets. They are easy to take care of and clean up after, and are fun to spend time with. They like getting out of their cage and playing, but sleep around 16 hours a day. So they don’t need constant attention.

  1. Turtles

If you don’t want the full commitment of taking care of a pet, turtles are a great choice. Turtles associate humans with food, but once they are fed they do not like to be played with. They do not like to be held and would rather be alone, but will be excited to see you and might run around their enclosure when you come near. This is a great alternative or option for a first pet!

There are many unique and interesting pets you can own, each with their own pros and cons. Because these animals are unique, they might have special needs that traditional pets such as dogs and cats might not need. If you decide to get one of these pets make sure to research how to take care of them, and make sure to consider all options before getting a new pet!
