What started off as a simple, homemade green screen in a book closet has transformed into one of the best high school broadcast programs in the St. Louis area. With the implementation of the new building and additionally offering broadcast as a class, St. Dominic has created new opportunities for students to find their passion.

In past years at St. Dominic, the broadcast program extended only as far as the weekly Crusader Nation broadcast and simple live-streams of sports and activities done through iPads. Now, with their own classroom and high-tech equipment, students have the chance to learn about the different aspects of the program and apply their skills in real life.

Students in broadcasting class are introduced to being both in front of and behind the camera. They learn techniques for commentating sporting events as well as announcing news. Additionally, students learn how to film and set up state of the art cameras for live-streams, and focus on improving their video filming and editing skills. The program allows for a well rounded balance of broadcast. 

“The reason this program is so important is because we do things that students will use in their future careers. That is the value of it. It prepares students for the next step in their lives,” broadcast teacher Mr. Noah Duncan said. 

St. Dominic has received positive feedback and recognition on all of the broadcast improvements. The quality of the livestreams and the professional manner of the commentators has impressed many viewers both from inside and outside the community. Students in the broadcast program were also recently recognized as first place winners of the Archdiocese of St. Louis Annual Catholic Appeal video competition.

It is rewarding to know that the broadcast program is impacting others, but the best part is knowing that it is changing the lives of the students who put in countless hours to make the program what it is today. Many students have found their passion and plan to pursue broadcasting in the future.  

“The broadcasting program has given me so many opportunities to grow as a person. I have gotten the privilege to see what it all is like behind the scenes, not only for shows, but football, basketball and even house games. All of the growth from this program has even gotten me a scholarship to college for it,” senior Jacob Jones said.

The broadcast program at St. Dominic is constantly growing and evolving. All of the hard work and dedication of the students and teachers has benefited the entire community. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for broadcasting at St. Dominic!
