Following the graduation of our beloved seniors last night, the reality of the end has finally crept up on the newest St. Dominic alumni.

The night started off with a beautiful Mass at St. Joseph’s Cottleville. It was administered by Father Gerber and his homily was definitely one to remember. His message for the departing class surely had a major impact as they prepare for their journey into the real world.

When it came time to hand out the long-awaited diplomas, you could feel the bittersweet excitement among the seniors. They were all anxiously waiting to receive what they’ve worked so hard for during their time at St. Dominic.

“It’s bittersweet. I’m sad all the memories of high school are over but I am excited to move onto the next chapter of my life. St. Dominic has shaped my morals and helped me be able to choose between right and wrong before going into college. I feel nervous about all the changes in my life but I think Dominic has prepared me enough to take the challenges head on. I am very excited for what is to come,” said future Mizzou Tiger Kelly Sitz.

After receiving their diplomas, the seniors finally felt the reality settling in. Their cherished time at St. Dominic is over and they are gearing up to begin the next chapter of their lives.

“I will miss the memories from Mr. Margadonna’s class, but I am excited to leave. St. Dominic has shown me how to balance goofing off and having fun, with studying and putting in the work. College will either be the spark I need to flourish and work hard, or I will just attempt to get past without trying. I am excited for the challenge,” said Class of ‘18 alum Blake Kuester.

To top off a successful night, valedictorian Alex Sabala delivered a powerful and moving speech about the impact of teachers in high school. Sabala also stressed the importance of St. Dominic’s four pillars and how they are at the core of everything we do.

“When I found out that I was valedictorian, I was overjoyed! It felt slightly surreal, but I was proud that all of my hard work paid off. In my speech, I focused on reminiscing about my time at St. Dominic beneath the scope of each of the Dominican pillars— prayer, study, community, and service. I recalled memories involving each pillar, and I sent my class off with some advice I have received from others who are much wiser than myself,” said valedictorian Alex Sabala.

Even with their excitement for the next chapter of their lives, the seniors will surely miss high school and appreciate the many gifts that St. Dominic has given them. The Class of 2018 will forever hold a place in our hearts and St. Dominic will always be there to welcome them home.
