As the year comes to an end, it comes time to rank the best movies of 2025. During this year, over 400 movies were released to the box office, many breaking records.
Number 5: A Minecraft Movie
A Minecraft Movie hit theatres in April and it was an automatic success. There was so much anticipation already for the movie due to the star of it being Jack Black. The movie was packed with fun for the entire family to enjoy, and it was easy to follow whether watchers had played Minecraft before or not. The movie became popular on TikTok after videos of teenagers going crazy in the theatres to the line “Chicken Jockey”! Besides the unfortunate mess left from the trend, teens on TikTok also held onto the song “Lava Chicken,” which quickly became a hit around America after the movie was released.
Number 4: Lilo and Stich
Lately, Disney has been on a run of remaking their classic cartoon movies into live action. Lilo and Stitch was not an exception to this. Disney kept it very accurate in matching the original, keeping the original charm from the cartoon. There was very much concern before the movie came out that because the movie was live action, the CGI would not keep the image of Stitch alive, however that was quickly disputed once fans entered the theatres. The CGI was seamless in the film, and although the character of Stitch isn’t a real animal, some could have sworn that he looked real. Besides the topic of CGI, fans also adored the little actress, Maia Kealoha, who played Lilo. She perfected the angsty attitude that the original Lilo had, as well as charming the screens with the perfect Hawaiian essence.
Number 3: Zootopia 2
Zootopia 2 was the expansion of the world of animals that can coherently live together in different terrains. The film goes deeper and explains plot holes from the past that were never explained. The topic was mainly over how fans never saw any reptiles or water animals in the original film. The movie brought back iconic characters such as Judy Hopps and Nic Wilde, while also bringing new characters with popular voices such as Andy Samberg, Macaulay Culkin, and Brenda Song. This film takes fans on a new tour through Zootopia, and gets to uncover the secrets as to why the world works for the animals so well.
Number 2: K-Pop Demon Hunters
Although not a theatre release film, K-Pop Demon Hunters captured the hearts of many through their own homes. The movie was released on Netflix in late August and it took the world by storm, specifically the age group pre-schoolers and middle schoolers. With catchy songs such as “Soda Pop” and “Golden”. The film inspired many Halloween costumes this year as well with little girls dressing Rumi and running around with purple braids. The film was also breaking records becoming Netflix’s most viewed film ever with over 200 million views as well as the songs charting in Billboard’s Hot 100 for 15 weeks.
Number 1: Wicked: For Good
Wicked: For Good was the much anticipated sequel to Wicked, which came out on Thanksgiving last year. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are the stars of the film in which they play Elphaba and Glinda. Everything about this movie is top tier: the songs, vocals, actors, costumes, everything. The cinematography was realistic and it made the audience feel as if they were right there watching the original play. The film came with many plot twists and unexpected moments that shocked the audience. The film broke records reporting 250 million plus at the box office. The theatrics of it were amazing and the audience could not get enough.
Although the year is almost at an end, there are already so many movies with such high anticipation. The live action Moana and Toy Story 5 come out this summer and The Devil Wears Prada 2 coming in the spring. It’s no doubt that with all this anticipation the movies will be box office hits.
