At St. Dominic High School, there are a multitude of ways to get involved. The House System provides wonderful leadership opportunities.
Let’s spotlight one of these opportunities, the Special Event Captains, to get to know their unique contributions to the community. Whether you are thinking of being a Special Event Captain in the future or are just curious about the role, read on to learn how the Special Event Captains help make St. Dominic shine.
In addition to Homecoming, the biggest event, Special Event Captains plan the Winter Formal dance, Catholic School’s Week, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Prom. Catholic School’s Week is one of Special Event Coordinator Mrs. Courtney Gerard’s favorite events.
When it comes to planning the events, the Special Event Captains split up into smaller groups focused on different aspects of the event. For example, there could be a group in charge of advertising, a group devoted to creating on-theme games to play during Family Time, or a group dedicated to the decorations for a dance.
The Special Event Captains also collectively come up with possible themes for a dance and vote on the one they like the best. After they pick and the administration approves it, the theme for the dance is official.
Prom is a highly anticipated and exciting event. To plan Prom, a committee is created and composed of Special Event Captains. The committee goes to the dance’s venue the day of Prom to set up.
“You just get to meet so many new people through it, and I think Prom is a lot more memorable than Homecoming,” Special Event Captain and Prom Committee Member Callie Knott said.
Being a Special Event Captain is not without its challenges. The Winter Formal dance occurs in late January or early February and is for all high school grade levels, but it is not as big of a deal as Homecoming is. Winter Formal can be difficult to make a five-star success.
“Not a lot of people go to it, so it’s kind of a hit or miss, just depending on what crowd it reaches,” Special Event Captain Callie Knott said.
This year, the Special Event Captains are ramping up their role and the magic of the St. Dominic community by orchestrating even more events. They have a special surprise planned for Family Time in October! The captains are also working more with the House System and are going to try to implement more fun activities during Family Time.
Thank you to the Special Event Captains and Coordinator for their hard work to build up school spirit and make St. Dominic events amazing!
