New Christmas movies add joy throughout the hectic holiday season

The Christmas season is known for the joyous movies, not just old classics but also new sensations. Sitting down next to the warm fire, with hot chocolate, watching a Christmas movie, is one of the highlights of the season. With being in the thick of the holiday craziness, it is always nice to relax, and watch a new Christmas movie.

The hit movie Spirited came out in 2022 and is a musical comedy on Apple T.V. It starts Will Ferrel and Ryan Reynolds, this holiday hit retells the story of Charles Dickens’s 1843 Christmas Carol. The plot is based around a miserable man, who treats those around him with rudeness. This miraculous movie goes through three different phases of time; past, present, and future. Those different time periods reveal in the end why he is such a mad, and boring person. Make sure to watch this musical mystery movie.

The Holdovers is a new 2023 movie that hit the theaters in August, however it is a cinematic Christmas masterpiece. A professor stays on campus to watch a troubled kid, who has nowhere to go for the holidays. He forms an unbreakable bond with him and with the school’s cook, who has sadly just lost a son in the Vietnam War. This is a great film to watch with your friends.

“I was skeptical about watching this movie. At the beginning it was slightly confusing but it got going quickly after that. I really enjoyed watching this movie. It was different from other Christmas movies,” Junior Kelsey Kunz said.

New to Disney + this December, is Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever. This cartoon movie is one that all the kids have been excited for. It is based around the book Cabin Fever, Greg is stressed about getting a new video game console for Christmas. Along with that he and his family get stuck in a snowstorm on vacation. This is a comedy gold movie that all the children are raving about.

“I watched this movie with my little cousins and they loved it. I also enjoyed it but it is definitely for little kids. It was cute, and I highly recommend it for families around the Christmas season,” Senior Elise Kehoe said.

This year, Prime Video went lights out with the hit movie Candy Cane Lane. It is based around Eddie Murphy, who plays a jolly neighborhood man. He is dead set on winning the annual Christmas decorating contest, he gets an elf to help before chaos breaks out. The elf cast a spell to bring the 12 days of Christmas to life in this happy town. This movie brings the Christmas joy to life and is a family favorite.

One last show stopping movie is Falling for Christmas, which came out in November, on Netflix. Lindsey Lohan, who plays the main character, got in a skiing accident and has been diagnosed with amnesia. When in a lodge she falls for a handsome man, who sweeps her off her feet. But what about her old life? This is a spectacular movie that keeps anyone on their feet.

“This was a great movie. It had drama and holiday spirit. The whole time I wanted to know what was going to happen next. It is definitely worth the watch,” Junior Brytn Lyon said.

The Christmas season would not be the same without the oldies, but goodies. However, the new movies add such joy and excitement to the holiday season. Make sure to check out these movies to find a new Christmas favorite.
