The students of St. Dominic seem to always be so wrapped up doing stuff after school, but what are they really doing? Most students are multitasking in sports and jobs, but some are solely dedicated to working. There are many different jobs that students have, ranging from working at a gas station to working at a retail store. Some of these jobs are very unusual for a typical teenager to have.
”During summer I worked ten to twenty hours a week, but during volleyball season I work about 5 hours, which is one shift a week, whereas during summer I worked around 3 to 4 shifts a week,” senior Addy Burroughs said.
Multitasking can be a very difficult thing to do, especially for teenagers, so seeing them prioritize working over seeing their friends has shown a shift in the world around us. Having a job as a teenager is very demanding and very difficult to balance school, hobbies, and work, but seeing people accomplish it shows us that it’s not unmanageable.
”I love my job, I really do. I work at WaterWay and I love it and they are very accommodating to my needs,” junior Maria Nettler said.
Balancing sports, school, and a job is not ideal and it’s definitely not easy, but many students will agree that it’s very rewarding in the end. Time management, responsibility, and communication are key factors to balance school, work, and sports, so it really teaches kids valuable life lessons. These jobs aren’t only helping students buy things they may want, it also helps them gain independence and feel proud of themselves for being able to do multiple different tasks and see a reward in the end.
“I work at the Famous Footwear in Wentzville and it is super calm and such a fun job, especially since my volleyball schedule can be very chaotic,” senior Addy Burroughs said.
The student jobs around St. Dominic show how hard-working and dedicated these students are to become the best version of themselves. Even though they face long days and lots of challenges, they still apply themselves in the classroom and are able to succeed. These opportunities don’t only show them responsibility and independence, it also shows them how important it is to always apply themselves because it can benefit them long after high school.
