Family time is a beloved part of the school day. St. Dominic has graced its students with 15 minutes per day to socialize with students that you might otherwise not know. Students from all different grades are brought together to get to know each other.
Having this break between classes is refreshing, and a great chance to relax and have fun. Some family times, however, are more motivated by the chance to win the house cup.
“Mostly, we talk about how we can increase our points and strategize, but we also find ways to hang out together,” freshman Avery McMillen said.
It is a favorite, here at St. Dominic, to play wordle during family time. It is the typical back up plan for a day where nothing else is planned. Regardless, it’s a great way to relax and get people involved. Some people prefer having the same thing to do every day or on a weekly basis. Some families have traditions like food days every Friday or watching a movie every Monday.
“It’s fun for the kids to know what they’re gonna have so they can look forward to something. Like, Thursdays, we have a cup pong tournament, and they can get excited for that. I think routine is just good in general,” Mr. Jack Hogan said.
Being in the same family for all four years can bring people together. People you might have otherwise never met become your companions for 15 minutes every day for four years. One day, a freshman will look up to the seniors in their family, but before they know it they are the seniors trying their best to make the freshman feel welcome.
“We like to do karaoke and we like to force the freshmen to do karaoke also,” senior Natalie Whede said.
Family captains work tirelessly to make sure their families are always happy to be there. Family time can be the best time if they make the most of it, but this means constantly planning and putting together fun activities.
“We do food days like every other week. We play games. It’s amazing! Feels like a community” gaudium family captain Katie Smith said.
Community is one of the four pillars here, and therefore incredibly important to the people of St. Dominic. Family time is one of the best opportunities St. Dominic gives their students to build a united and more diverse community.
