As St. Dominic continues deeper into the fall sports season, we have decided to spotlight those players who have been putting in the hard work. This week, varsity field hockey goalie Sam Liszewski has been honored athlete of the week.
This season is Sam’s very first time playing field hockey. Sam was encouraged to join by one of her friends due to their need of having a goalie. Sam also played lacrosse for St. Dominic and volleyball for the club Momentum, so she already had natural athletic talent.
“I was really nervous about playing a sport I’ve never played before, but I’ve been playing sports all my life so I figured if someone just taught me how to play I could figure it out,” said Liszewiski.
Sam has already had a great start to the season with a shutout game versus Rockwood Summit and she has been ranked eighth in the St. Louis area. She has had many saves this season so far and plans on keeping that streak going. Sam has been putting the work in and it is definitely paying off.
“Sam is always willing to try something new that I throw out at her even if she doesn’t know how to do it or is not very comfortable with it. She is also very good at listening to my coaching and reflecting it onto the field,” said varsity goalie coach Leah Brozovich.
Even though Sam is working hard on the field, she is also always there for her teammates. She loves to play with all her friends and coaches, and always has a smile on her face.
“Sam is amazing, she is always so happy to be here and any time the girls look at her even if they’re in a rough mood, Sam always seems to make them start giggling or smiling,” said head varsity coach Beckey Patterson.
Sam plans to keep working extra hard this season, to build her knowledge and skills for the sport. Don’t forget to check back in next week for the football athlete of the week, and try to make it out to a game to see Sam play!
