With a new school year comes fun, dedication, and responsibility. However, a new school year also brings friendly new faces including students and faculty.
This time around St. Dominic has welcomed 15 new teachers to the community. While the transition hasn’t been easy, the environment of the school has been a key aspect to making a successful transition for some teachers.
“I chose to come to St. Dominic because I was in a spot professionally where I felt like I really needed change. My hope was that it was a change of environment, to continue to be passionate about education and teaching versus a change in career fields,” History Teacher Mrs. Kim Schellert said.
Although teaching is their job, some teachers look at it as an opportunity to have fun everyday, and connect with their students in unique ways.
“I like my job a lot. Like, this is what I get to do, I get to do this for a living,” Biology Teacher Mrs. Becky McDonald said.
Teachers have the power to make immense change in their students’ lives. As a St. Dominic alumni, religion teacher Mr. Jack Hogan has the opportunity to repay the kindnesses of his teachers to his own students.
“As an adult I had seen how much the faith life had grown here, so I decided to come back. I will say coming back, I’ve seen a lot more school spirit than in years past and I think the house system has had a lot to do with that,” Mr. Hogan said.
Faith is such a powerful thing, especially when incorporated into a teaching atmosphere. Although Mrs. Terri Fisher-Reed teaches English and not religion, her faith has transformed her into the person she is today.
“My faith has impacted my teaching greatly. It’s made me believe that a Catholic education is not only a good education, but it can be a life saving education. It can be something that just turned you into something you never would have been in the first place,” Mrs. Fisher-Reed said.
Although these are just a few of our new faculty members, they are clearly already an integral part of the St. Dominic community. We are so excited to see them flourish throughout the year, make long-lasting impressions on their students, and grow in faith. We welcome our new faculty with open and loving arms!
