Hocus Pocus 2: Not Worth the Watch

Disney Plus

Sanderson Sisters return to the screens in Hocus Pocus Two.

In 1993 the classic movie Hocus Pocus made its debut featuring three witch sisters in Salem, Massachusetts. These clever witches loved to hunt children and use their powers for the worst. Twenty-nine years later to September 30th the sequel, Hocus Pocus 2 aired on Disney Plus.

In many cases, fans often find sequels to be cheesy, boring and not able to live up to the original, which also seemed to happen with this sequel. In both of the movies, the theme remained the same, good always conquers evil. Each time the soul sucking Sanderson sisters came back after being hung, they were killed again after a long fought battle.

In the sequel, the movie was slightly disappointing in more ways than one. Overall the setting of the movie rarely changed, and most of the shots were very dim causing a lack of interest in the action.

The plot of the movie had many ups and downs, most of it felt like filter shots rather than actual events that could have been created. A fan favorite from the original movie was attempted to be brought back into the second. Once the sisters broke out in song, charming the townspeople, they sang a throwback, rather than a song that was original to the movie itself.

The creators put forth a great effort to try and tie the two movies together. Both movies opened with a dark figure flying across the scene to a “flashback’’,  before being brought to the present day. Also, the witches made their way back to Salem by the same ritual, and each time felt the love of some townspeople from their ‘costumes.’

One thing that was truly missing from the plot was the Dennisons. The new movie only brought back the sisters and introduced a whole new list of characters, leaving the Dennisons nowhere to be found. In most cases, other sequels will bring back most of the old cast members to the new movies for some consistency.

Like usual, the original Hocus Pocus was far better than the sequel. Although it was great to see the Sanderson sisters go through a long journey of change, the movie was a huge let down to many fans.
