Work Hard, Play Hard

The St. Dominic varsity football team has given the fans something to cheer about–an undefeated season. The boys defeated John Burroughs, defending state champs, in the first game of the season. Without a single disappointment, they have kept the energy up with a five-win streak. The atmosphere on the field and in the crowd has significantly changed as the Crusaders continue to put on a show.

The 2015 football season ended in a devastating loss to U-City in the district championships. Instead of feeling defeated, the varsity football players used this loss as motivation. Coach Blake Markway started training for the 2016 season immediately afterwards. Football truly is a year-round sport; they play in the fall and train during the winter, spring and summer. The football team had a lot of work to do, but they have proved that hard work pays off when they defeated John Burroughs, Westminster, Liberty, Borgia and Christian.

“We worked really hard this summer. We definitely changed how hard we work and the thought process of what we do when we’re working. It’s not about just getting it done with, it’s about doing whatever it takes to get better and it’s paid off so far. My goal for this season is to win games and make sure that everyone who comes out has a good show. I mean we like to impress everybody and we like to work hard, so that’s what we’re doing,” said varsity captain and senior Dominic Demerath.

The varsity football team has given the front-row fans a run for their money. The show put on by the football team has resulted in a packed student section until the clock hits zero. Mondays are marked by scratchy voices and sore throats after intense cheering under the Friday night lights. The boys proved that they didn’t just come to play, they came to win.
