From a young age, Sophomore Peyton Roberts fell in love with the sport of basketball. Growing up, she competed on numerous club basketball teams and often played countless games a weekend. Now, fast forward to her Sophomore year of high school, where she has become a star for the St. Dominic varsity women’s basketball team.
Although Robert’s high school career is only a couple of years old, she has already proven herself as an exceptional athlete and teammate, and a huge asset to the Crusader basketball team.
“Peyton is always a leader on the court for us. She always has a calm demeanor and we know we can trust her in any situation,” Head Varsity Coach Wilmes said.
As a freshman, Peyton wowed coaches at tryouts and immediately began practicing with the Varsity team. While Peyton was consistently playing against girls four years older than her, she didn’t let it phase her and chose to practice and play harder. Rather than hiding in a shell, she rose to the occasion.
“My hard work has paid off by starting varsity as a freshman. This accomplishment has let me know that while I have worked hard to earn a spot, I still have to work hard to keep it,” Robert’s said.
The social aspects of basketball also appeal to Peyton, who loves her teammates.
“Playing the sport I love with my close friends has always made me want to play more,” Robert’s said.
Currently, Peyton holds the role of point guard and can often be seen shooting 3-pointers. Besides her great shooting skills, Peyton also knows how to handle the ball and uses her skills to her advantage. Being a point-guard requires focus, strength, and determination- three things Peyton excels at.
”She has a tremendous work ethic, and it shows when she plays. She has the ability to score in so many ways and is such a smart defensive player too,” Wilmes said.
In the future, Robert’s will continue to compete on St. Dominic’s varsity team, and in the off-season play in the CNR league. Staying in the moment is important, but so is continuing to play hard and prepare for the future.
”The plan is to continue to see her grow as a person and a player. Also, to keep taking the next steps in her development,” Wilmes said.
There’s no doubt that Robert’s is an excellent player, and consistently helps lead the girls basketball team to victory. Although she is only a sophomore, there are many great things in store for her in the future.
