After St. Dominic’s success in the Tackle Hunger fundraiser, a select group of St. Dominic students were invited to air on KSDK’s popular segment: Show Me St. Louis. Out of eighteen schools competing in the competitive food drive, St. Dominic has already raised the highest amount of food, drawing attention from local news companies.
Last Friday morning, St. Dominic students Keeley Skiljan, Lucy Ryan, Will Kandlbinder, Brady Burgio, Mikayla Dudley, and junior Owen Wolf, made an appearance on the show.
“We have four pillars at St Dominic, community and service being one of them, which Tackle Hunger pairs really well with,” senior Keeley Skiljan said.
During the show, KSDK news anchors interviewed students from the unbelievable community here at St. Dominic. Although it was Dominic’s first time competing in the Tackle Hunger Fundraiser, staff and students alike had no problem joining forces to help defeat the problem of hunger.
“Everyone in our community gives back and uses our resources no matter the cause. We all have big hearts that go above and beyond for those in need. The whole community came together for the sake of helping others,” senior Lucy Ryan said.
Many individuals were surprised, yet impressed, by the amount of food St. Dominic was able to collect. While other local schools are currently competing in the challenge, St. Dominic is in the lead by nearly 4,972 lbs. Additionally, St. Dominic gathered over 10,830 pounds of food, something KSDK considers an incredible success.
“The Tackle Hunger Food Drive was a wonderful opportunity for SDHS to give back to the greater St. Louis community. The response from our students was AMAZING with nearly 11,000 pounds of food being donated,” Dean of Students Mrs. Liszewski said.
Many people question how the Dominic community came together to pull off the incredible feat? There’s no doubt that St. Dominic did a fantastic job advertising the food drive, especially through means of social media and posting reminders throughout the school. Additionally, the show praised St. Dominic for setting a bold goal of collecting 10,000 pounds of food and achieving it, as they were fascinated by Dominic’s quick support and communication.
“I think just getting it out there helped a ton. Every morning we had bins outside of the atrium so that kids and parents could see what was happening,” Ryan said.
Although St. Dominic has currently raised the most amount of food for the food drive, Operation Food Search is still looking for donations. Other schools are still collecting food and competing against one another. While the Dominic community has a strong bond, make sure to go the distance and support other schools for a good cause too!
