St. Dominic Softball is in full swing this year and the team is having a great season. The girls currently have a record of 11-4 and made history earlier this season when they played the first ever night game on the diamond.
However, all of this would not be possible without star senior pitcher and leader, Kelsey Kunz.
Kelsey is currently a four year varsity member at St. Dominic, and has been a varsity leader since her freshman year. Head softball coach Noah Duncan knew placing her on the team so young was the right move.
“She showed a talent level that was warranted of a varsity level position. But, then she also had a bulldog mentality. In other words, she would go through a wall to accomplish what she wanted. That’s the varsity mentality. She was ahead of her years in that way,” Coach Duncan said.
In her senior year, Kelsey hit her 300th strikeout in her St. Dominic career while pitching a 2-0 shutout against Farmington. With performances like this, it’s easy to see why she is such an effective leader.
“I’ve learned many leadership skills that have helped me grow into the person I am today. Being on varsity has impacted my Dominic experience by creating so many new bonds and friendships over the years,” Kelsey said.
Kelsey’s senior night is fastly approaching as her and fellow seniors Angie Willams and Emma Yates will be celebrating October 3 against IWA in a night game that should prove to be very memorable.
“I’m looking forward to having our senior night under the lights. That just really bumps it up. It is so exciting to just celebrate my four years of playing softball for Dominic. I can’t wait,” Kelsey said.
After these four years, Kelsey will have left a huge softball legacy behind. She has been a role model on the team, a fixture in the circle and one of the team’s strongest hitters since she was a freshman. Kelsey has and will continue to take the field by storm as she will play over 100 games of varsity ball, amass over 300 strikeouts and finish with a batting average above .325. What a high school career. If you get a chance to watch this amazing softballer over the next couple of weeks don’t pass it up.
