From Frozen, to Cars, to Finding Nemo, Disney has played a crucial part in many people’s childhoods. One can only speculate when this downward spiral began. However, it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Fans everywhere have been noticing Disney’s recent lack of creativity. The recent announcement of Disney’s upcoming works at their biennial fan event left the fans both shocked and confused. Within the next five years, movies such as; Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion King, Freakier Friday, a live action Snow White remake, a live-action Lilo and Stitch remake, Zootopia 2, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and more will be in development.
Although there are a few original movies in development such as A Complete Unknown, The Amateur, and Thunderbolts. fans could not help but realize that the majority of new Disney movies will either be sequels, prequels, or a live action remake. While this is a fun idea to bring many people back in time and get to see their favorite movies modernized, many can’t help but realize Disney’s recent lack of innovation.
Disney produced many amazing movies that made their mark on several generations’ childhoods. Movies such as Frozen, Tangled, and Toy Story are some of the most popular and loved movies of generation Z. The thing that made these movies so great is their never-seen-before animation styles, unforgettable and iconic characters, and their creative plots. Disney movies never felt old or reused, but sadly, that is no longer the case.
Although technological advances have made the world of storytelling expand even more, it still seems that Disney has a growing obsession with remaking older movies. Rather than using these innovations to bring new ideas to life, they seem to be getting stuck in the cycle of repurposing old ideas. Disney has produced remakes in the past such as “Peter Pan and Wendy”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Cruella”, “Maleficent”, and “Aladdin”. These remakes grabbed the attention of millions with their advanced uses of CGI and other technically advanced effects. While it was exciting to see that light was being shed on old movies after many years. However, Disney has officially produced twenty-one live action remakes since 1994. Not to forget, at this time they were still making brand new and never-seen-before movies with their own creative concept. It’s very hard to say that all of Disney’s remakes feel stale, because that is not the case.
Disney’s live action movies are without a doubt mesmerizing. Using the live action Little Mermaid as an example, the creativity behind this reimagined fairy tale was extravagant to say the very least. They used advanced levels of technology to bring the movie to life. From the mermaid tails to each fin of the fish, the movie was loved by thousands and they loved to see their favorite character in a new light.
Disney always puts in lots of effort in every movie they make, however it is clear to many fans that Disney is losing the magic that it once had in the movie industry.
