On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!
With spring sports starting up, St. Dominic track athletes lace up their cleats for the upcoming season. The track athletes had a great season last year, but this season they have new goals and standards that they plan on achieving.
Athletes who prepare for tryouts decide if they will be competing for varsity or junior varsity. No matter the outcome, St. Dominic track and field athletes have many goals for this season. The track coaches also have goals for their athletes.
“We continue to improve individually and as a team throughout the season so we are hitting our best times and performances in May,” Head Track Coach, Blake Markway said.
Even though track and field are somewhat of an individual sport, St. Dominic athletes and coaches have found a way to make track and field more of a team effort. They do this by always being supportive, cheering and pushing one another to be the best they can be.
“Someone who always supports me on the track is Megan Osterholt. She has been a great leader for me, I basically do whatever Megan does while on the track because I know it will make me a better runner,” long distance runner Abby Woytus said.
Pole vaulting and shot put are two of the many field events St. Dominic offers. Two athletes who compete in those events are sophomore Will Dery and senior TJ Kwapiszeski. Both of them participated in field events last year and enjoyed it.
“Last season was a pretty beneficial season for me. I was 0.6 meters away from going to sectionals for shot put. Which I was proud of for it being my second year throwing,” thrower TJ Kwapiszeski said.
Based on how well St. Dominic did last season in track and field. They have a promising future for this upcoming season, and will make the St. Dominic community proud.
