Enola Holmes 2: Somehow Better than the First
Enola Holmes 2 might be one of the best movies of the year and may outshine its original movie. With fun action, cute romances and a compelling mystery this film seems to have it all. If you haven’t seen this movie check it out on Netflix, anyone can watch and enjoy this wonderful story.
Enola Holmes 2 is the sequel to Enola Holmes, based off of the book series by the same name, written by Nancy Springer. We follow the character Enola Holmes, the younger sister of the infamous Sherlock Holmes, as she takes on her first official case. As she embarks her search for the missing Sara Chapman she starts to uncover a much greater mystery.
Enola Holmes 2 has a remarkable story line that perfectly continues the first movie’s relationships and themes without being a carbon copy of the original. The most interesting part of the whole story may be the fact that it shines a light on a real life event, the Matchgirl Strike of 1888. Sara Chapman, the missing girl, is a real person who helped lead this strike. Though some of the plot is fabricated, the movie does a great job of teaching women’s suffrage to the younger generations.
The relationships in his movie are spectacularly written. There is a brother-sister relationship where viewers get to experience them grow together and become more familial. Enola and Sherlock learn to truly value one another and everything they have been through. We also have a romantic relationship between Enola and the Duke of Tewkesbury that you can’t help but root for throughout the film. This couple also did not fall victim to the usual problem of a third love interest that happens in almost every sequel. Spectators are given a well thought out problem that they fix together. Enola learns that being independent doesn’t necessarily mean being alone and that allowing others to help can make someone stronger.
With a riveting plot and lovable characters Enola Holmes 2 is easy to become engrossed in. To top all of this off the actors are fantastic. Millie Bobby Brown has put on another astounding performance and continues to amaze audiences. With other big names such as Helena Bonham, Carter and Henry Cavill, people may think the cast is just a ploy just to convince many to watch. However, these actors fit their roles perfectly. They don’t overshadow the lesser known actors like Louis Partridge who excellently portrays his character. All of the actors’ chemistry on the show really shines through the screen and you can tell the directors have chosen a perfect cast.
This movie also does what most women empowerment movies can not. It does not force the female character upon viewers or make her fill a man’s role. She is an originally written character who uses her own strengths, but also suffers real female issues. Many were worried Enola was just a replacement for the beloved Sherlock, but that is far from the truth. They work alongside each other during the movie and are both shown to be good for different reasons. This makes the watcher truly appreciate this unique character and adore her just as much, if not more than her brother.
Though Enola Holmes 3 has not been confirmed, viewers will be keeping their fingers crossed that this story and its captivating story will be continued. Until then we will be forced to wait.
