Player to Watch: Abbie Danchus
This week’s “Player to Watch” is Varsity softball catcher Abbie Danchus! In just her third season of high school softball, Danchus is already breaking records and dominating on the diamond with no intentions of slowing down.
The Lady Crusader softball team is off to a fast and amazing start with a 11-4 record so far, and star catcher Danchus has been a huge part of the team’s success with three homers and 28 RBI’s.
Danchus has caught balls in every inning of every game the team has played. Although catching is her specialty on the field, Danchus’ bat has been on fire recently. Right now she is hitting .500 and is not expected to drop that number any time soon. She has already broken her personal career best of 10 for most doubles.
As the queen of doubles, Danchus is expected to crush the record for most doubles in a single season of 16 (Danchus already has 11 this season). With 30 career doubles, Danchus is also chasing the record for most doubles in school history which was set at 46 by Katie Kasubke ‘15.
“I plan on continuing to work hard and stay focused for every game. This year I feel like we have a really good chance to do well in districts and that makes me want to work even harder to help my team get there,” Danchus said.
With all of these records, Danchus received lots of attention from local sports outlets. Danchus is STLtoday’s Player of the Week and number one on their leaderboard for the most doubles and RBI’s. She was also voted Max Preps Player of the Week! Make sure to check out the links below to read these articles.
Danchus has been playing softball for almost 10 years saying it is “a passion of mine.” And while all of these records and personal bests are amazing for her, Danchus attributes her success to her team.
“My success this year so far has been greatly influenced by the girls on the team. Everyone always hypes me up and it fuels me to do even better. When I just recently received player of the week everyone was so happy for me and I couldn’t be more happy to be able to play with such a great group of girls,” Danchus said.
The Varsity softball girls have played almost everyday this past week so there is no shortage of excitement for Danchus as she continues to dominate in her record-breaking season.
Cheer on Abbie Danchus by attending one of the many Varsity softball games, either in-person or via livestream. Be sure to congratulate Danchus on her incredible season and wish the entire softball team a great rest of their season!
