Player to Watch: Post Season Jackson Overton
This week’s player to watch is junior running back, Jackson Overton. Last Friday, the St. Dominic varsity football team defeated the McCluer Comets 46-38. Overton showed his dedication and athleticism as he scored five touchdowns in that game and has eight total TDs in districts.
“McCluer is a really good football team and we had to come out there and we had to play our best. Hazelwood East is a really good squad and we’ve got to come out with the same intensity we did against McCluer,” Overton said.
Overton has been a force to be reckoned with on the varsity football team ever since he was a freshman, and he looks to carry his team far this postseason too. He has always been a reliable player who takes the fans’ breath away with every play for the past two years. In his past two district games he rushed for over 300 yards and is averaging over eight yards a carry.
“Making varsity as a freshman was always one of my goals ever since I entered middle school. Making a dream a reality was beyond awesome and walking out onto that field for the first time is something I will never forget. The marching band playing, the crowd screaming, and lights shining was one of the most memorable moments of my life.”
This week with the first ever District Championship in the SDHS stadium, those memories will just keep adding up.
“It’s definitely a blessing having the home crowd behind us. This atmosphere will push us to do our best,” Overton said.
It’s no wonder why Overton is such an outstanding football player as he started playing football at the age of four. After falling in love with the sport, Overton worked hard for his achievements and grew into a phenomenal starting running back.
“I fell in love with football at a young age. I would throw the ball to myself for hours in my backyard when I was just 4. I started playing flag football when I was 5 and started playing competitive tackle football in just 2nd grade. I have been playing ever since. This year is my 10th year of tackle football,” said Overton.
The sky’s the limit for Overton. Planning to play football in college has always been a dream of his, and by the way things are looking, we’ll see him on the big screens one day.
