Drama Strikes Netflix
Netflix subscribers unhappily came forward to show their opinions on the new Netflix show Cuties. The show is extremely inappropriate, as it consists of underage girls in questioning poses and in an unusual appearance. Some Netflix subscribers have already cancelled their memberships due to the controversy.
This French coming-of-age film sexualises young girls in an unacceptable manner. While this film may have spiked the viewing on this streaming website, it was not intended in a good way. According to Twitter, Netflix lost five times as many subscribers in the five days that followed the release of the film than it ever had in 30 whole days.
U.S. congressmen came forward, calling Netflix to abolish the film and contacted authorities to investigate if this filmmakers or the streaming service violated the extreme laws of child pornography after the release of Cuties.
After backlash hit Netflix in August, when the film was released, and criticism grew dramatically on social media because of the striking uniforms and short skirts while in various dance poses, Netflix came forward with an apology. They announced their apology for the “inappropriate” artwork promoting the film.
On social media, accusations that the film promoted sexual inaction of children were thrown, and Netflix was accused of promoting pedopehlia. Loads of petitions were posted online for the removal of the film, and others threatened to cancel their subscription if the film was not taken down as soon as possible. This includes people who had not even viewed the film.
“Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. It’s an award winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up – and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie,” Netflix responded to the criticism in a statement, provided to USA TODAY.
While this mind boggling film left many viewers and authorities speechless, it is no surprise that Netflix has a bad reputation after the release. While tons of people have decided to leave the streaming platform, Netflix has hit an all time low. With all of the drama and tension rising against Netflix, Cuties is still able to be viewed on Netflix, leaving subscribers furiated.
