Unplanned Hits Theaters
Last week, the riveting and moving pro-life movie Unplanned was released, and the box office can’t ignore the numbers. The movie was in the top five this weekend, despite only being shown in 1,059 theaters. Public support for the movie was also off the charts, with 94 percent of viewers who saw the film giving it positive reviews.
Unplanned follows the story of Abby Johnson, the youngest clinic director in the history of Planned Parenthood turned pro-life activist. The film shows the gruesome reality of abortion and makes all viewers—pro-life or not—question its morality.
“It’s a very vulnerable place to sort of expose some of your greatest wounds and hurts to the public, but in the end, this film’s really not about me. I didn’t do this so Abby Johnson would be a household name. I did this so God’s redemption—that would be known in every household,” Johnson said in an interview with CBN.
I saw Unplanned Saturday and have to say I was impressed. I was expecting the quality of the film to be lower because of its low budget, but I was proven wrong. The storyline of the film also speaks for itself. Everyone in the theater was holding their breaths, laughing, cheering and crying in the span of an hour and a half.
For a movie with this much success, you would think social media would be blowing up about it. That’s hardly the case.
Executives across various media platforms have limited its marketing either intentionally or accidentally. The biggest culprit was Twitter.
The Unplanned Twitter account was suspended Saturday. Even shortly after the account was reinstated, people could not follow it.
“It is a sad time we live in when corporations can remove individuals’ freedom of speech at will. When did we empower these corporations to have such authority? More importantly, why do we empower them to do so?” Cary Solomon, co-writer and co-director of the film, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
In response, Twitter told Fox News that their systems mistakenly linked the “Unplanned” account to another account that violated its rules.
“It wasn’t directly about this account. When an account violates the Twitter rules, the system looks for linked accounts to mitigate things like ban evasion. In this case, the account was mistakenly caught in our automated systems for ban evasion,” a Twitter spokeswoman explained via email.
Although the world attempts to silence the pro-life movement,, Unplanned inspires us to stand up and fight for the lives of others.
“I want abortion to become unthinkable. I want everyone who sees the film to see how God’s love and mercy can change their lives. And I want people to understand that love is the only way we are going to win the war against abortion,” Johnson said.
