This past week marks the start of the spring musical, Mary Poppins. Students have been eagerly awaiting the casting. The production team has been hard at work behind the scenes, ensuring that every role is perfectly cast to bring the story to life.
The auditions and callbacks were intense, with many talented students showcasing their skills in hopes of landing a coveted role. The selection process was undoubtedly challenging, as the level of talent this year was exceptional. The final cast list is a testament to the dedication and hard work of all those involved.
“Callbacks are incredibly stressful for actors, but it’s also an honor to know that you’re being seriously considered for a role,” senior Trenton Blattel said.
This year director and theatre teacher, Mrs. Hobbs has decided to make an unprecedented decision unlike anything St. Dominic has seen for the past spring musicals. She decided to double cast.
Double casting means that there will be four performances with two shows for each cast. She has put two students in each lead role. Mrs. Hobbs saw so much potential in the group of students auditioning that it was impossible to feature all the talent in one cast.
“It was a really tough call to make, I definitely don’t envy being in her shoes,” senior Cameron Schwent said.
In the end, both Ella Schmitz and Gabby Chiradonna landed the desired role of Mary Poppins with the former playing opposite Liam McMullin as Bert, the male lead, and the ladder with Will Dery as her counterpart.
“I’ve always wanted to play Bert and I’m excited to take on the challenges that come with it,” senior Will Dery said.
Regardless of the outcome, the entire school community is looking forward to a fantastic production that will highlight the incredible talent and teamwork of the students. Stay tuned for more updates as the rehearsals begin and the journey to opening night unfolds.
