Celebrating 100 Years of Musicals
The Muny, St. Louis’s expansive outdoor theater, is celebrating its 100th season of musicals this summer with seven special shows.
This year’s musicals were chosen with one goal in mind: to represent how special the Muny is for St. Louis and its musical theatre community. The Muny has been a part of St. Louis culture for a century, and it holds a special place in the hearts of many.
Two of this year’s musicals are important because the Muny will be the first theater in the United States to produce them—Jersey Boys and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. Being the first to produce them cements the Muny’s high place in American theatre and will draw large audiences to see these productions.
“This is an incredible moment in our history to celebrate a 100th season, and I think these titles are a great nod to our history and future,” said Denny Reagan, President and CEO of the Muny.
Singin’ In the Rain and Gypsy are the Muny’s tributes to the classics. They also make a direct contrast to Jersey Boys and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, which are completely new shows. These four musicals provide a wide spectrum and a richly diverse lineup for musical theatre lovers.
For those who love to bring their families to see the shows, there is Annie and The Wiz. These shows are perfect for all generations and have remained family favorites over the years.
Finally, the Muny will put on the classic Meet Me In St. Louis. This choice was pretty predictable, as it is a favorite among St. Louis natives and incorporates St. Louis history, fantastic music and a timeless storyline.
Despite the exciting selections, the shows themselves may not even be the best part of this season. In beyond exciting news, the Muny recently announced that childhood icon and High School Musical star Corbin Bleu is set to star in Singin’ In The Rain. People cannot wait for the opportunity to see this beloved actor play such an iconic role.
The Muny’s 100th season is an important tribute to everything that the Muny embodies and is sure to be one of the best yet!
