Curiosity, Camaraderie and Culture
Whether you’re looking for a way to encourage diversity at school or just want to try some new food, Culture Club is for you.
One of St. Dominic’s newest clubs, Culture Club, was started by juniors Amina Islam and Jordan Barr this past fall to promote diversity and put an end to racial stigmas.
“We thought it’d be a good way to spread culture especially at a time when the country’s so divided. I hope it will educate people because there is just a lot of ignorance running around. We talk about the culture and then at the next meeting we might have something to celebrate. We try to find someone who has part of that culture in their family or with them so that they can give a firsthand view of it,” said Islam.
For Hanukkah, the club held a food day and discussed traditional and modern Jewish Hanukkah traditions. To commemorate Black History Month, the club showed a movie that promoted diversity. To celebrate Chinese culture, Barr talked to the club about her childhood experiences celebrating this culture, and the next meeting included a festival.
“We’ve done everything from making paper lanterns to having food days, just different ways to engage everyone,” said Barr.
Culture Club has many exciting activities planned for the future that will include not only the members of Culture Club but many people school-wide.
“We’re trying to get a CultureFest under way but I don’t know if that’ll go through this year. But our plan is to have people represent different countries and have tables and food that represent the country. It’d be after school sometime so people could come through and get food and hear a little about their culture and so everyone at St. Dominic could share a little bit about their culture,” said Barr.
Culture Club has quickly become a hit, having to move meetings from Mr. Asher’s room to the PAC or Sister Mary Bender Lobby to accommodate the large crowd. If you’re interested in educating yourself, learning about international traditions or simply promoting unity within the school community, Culture Club is a great place to start.
