Stuck in Missouri: Spring Break 2018

With spring break on its way, finding an exciting new adventure can be a challenge if you are stuck in Missouri for a week. Here are a few local places to go to make your Spring Break one to remember.

Main Street St. Charles

An exciting local place to go to during your Spring Break is Main Street St. Charles. This outstanding area has a ton of great photo opportunities, unique stores and various restaurants that would make just about anyone hungry for a good time.

Many St. Dominic students spend their weekends shopping and exploring the historic area of Main Street St. Charles. One of these students is junior Maddie Jarka, who enjoys eating at the many famed restaurants in the district.

“My favorite thing to do at Main Street St. Charles is to walk up and down the streets and look around in the different shops. I also love eating at the restaurants because they are amazing,” said Jarka.

From art galleries to boutiques, there is truly something for everybody on Main Street St. Charles. Shops like Hobbit’s Hole Antiques and Grandma’s Cookies will satisfy both the old soul and the food junkie in you.

Elephant Rocks State Park/Johnson Shut-In’s Park

Another worthwhile spot is the Elephant Rocks State Park in Belleview, Missouri. Although it is a bit of a drive, this stunning park full of lush trees and massive rocks is the perfect place to go if you are searching for adventure. Activities like hiking and picnics are just the beginning of what is in store for your trip to Elephant Rocks.

Another fantastic option is the Johnson Shut-In’s Park, located near Elephant Rocks in Middle Brook, Missouri. From the impressive rock formations to the various swimming holes, you are guaranteed a memorable time.

Take it from SDHS junior Nick Bone. He has been to both parks and has never left the campgrounds without a smile on his face and a few more stories to tell at the campfire.

“My time at Elephant Rocks was incredible. We made so much food, listened to some awesome music and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was truly a time I will never forget,” said Bone.

When comparing the two fun-filled parks, Bone prefers Johnson Shut-In’s State Park without hesitation.

“Johnson Shut-In’s is my favorite because I love swimming and seeing nature. When I was there, I jumped off a super high cliff into the water and unfortunately lost my shoe, but it was worth it!” said Bone.

Whether you are an avid outdoorsman or simply a bored spring breaker, both of these parks are sure to exceed your expectations.

Saint Louis Science Center

For the more “indoorsy” individual, the Science Center is the perfect destination for you. Located just 30 minutes away from St. Dominic, this fun-filled museum is an ideal last-minute trip. From interactive exhibits about Mars to gigantic dinosaur animatronics, there is no way you will ever get bored. If you are planning a career in a science-related field, consider checking out this informational yet entertaining museum. Junior Kateri Koch frequently spends her time at the Science Center with her younger siblings.

“My favorite thing to do at the Science Center is see the weather exhibit and do the tornado and earthquake simulators. It’s so cool but scary at the same time,” said Koch.

Even if you are not a huge science fan, there is no doubt that you will be constantly entertained by the many jaw-dropping exhibits and activities at the Science Center.

Katy Trail

Another outdoorsy option for your ideal spring break is the Katy Trail. This multipurpose trail spans over 200 miles, but the closest and most ideal location is in St. Charles, Missouri.

With a plethora of activities available, there will never be a dull moment on your visit to the Katy Trail. From hiking to fishing to biking, this park is an outdoorsman’s dream.

One of these nature junkies is SDHS junior Jenika Hazelbaker. She uses the vast expanse of nature as an escape from her otherwise hectic life.

“I like the Katy Trail because it is very peaceful. You’re not bothered by a lot of people or noise because of how extensive the trail is. It’s surrounded by beautiful nature, which is a nice change from being in the busy suburbs all the time,” said Hazelbaker.

Although the scenery may look picturesque, be on the lookout for dangerous animals lurking about the trail. Unfortunately, Hazelbaker was not very observant during her trip to the Katy Trail.

“Not even 10 minutes into the hike, I nearly stepped on an orange snake because I wasn’t paying attention to where we were walking. I have a huge fear of snakes, so I screamed and actually sprinted back to my car,” said Hazelbaker.

Be sure to check out the Katy Trail in St. Charles if you want to add a bit of adventure to your spring break.

Hopefully by adding these destinations to your spring break to-do list, you will experience a little more adventure and make some unforgettable memories right here in Missouri.
