Winter Sports Wrap-Up

As the weather heats up, so are the St. Dominic basketball teams. Both boys and girls basketball are preparing for districts, and they hope to make a playoff run.

The men’s basketball team is wrapping up their season and looking forward to the playoffs. The team has an 11-13 record, including a 4-6 conference record. Their hard work and dedication is what makes this team special.

“We are the hardest working team on the floor every night. Even when we aren’t playing well we can still count on each other to give effort,” said Mueller.

Coach Kevin Roberts is back this year, and the team loves what he brings to the table.

“Coach does a great job of making us want to get better. Instead of dreading practice [like] in the past, we get excited to go to practice and get better. The entire atmosphere of the team and program changed. We work hard for Coach because he works hard for us,” said Mueller.

The team begins districts on Monday, February 26, against Mexico. Game time is 6:00 PM at Hannibal High School. As they prepare for the postseason, the team is focused on getting in the right mindset.

“We need to work on getting back to moving the ball and playing very intense defense,” said senior center Keith Beckmann.

On the other hand, the Lady Crusaders are finishing a strong season, posting a record of 18-6. Their fantastic record earned them the number one seed in their district. The team has seven seniors, which really helps the team chemistry.

“I think the chemistry on the team is a big part of our success. We are all really close, which shows on and off of the court,” said senior guard Maddie Ballard.

The ladies begin districts on Tuesday, February 27, at Hannibal High School. They earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of Hannibal vs. Liberty. Every game means so much more in the postseason, so the team is working on handling the intensity.

“We have been working hard on breaking the press and handling pressure and I think that will help us going forward,” said Ballard.

Both of our basketball teams have had very successful seasons, and hope to continue that success into the postseason. Be sure to support them at districts on February 26 and 27 at Hannibal High School.
