Oscars Predictions: Who Will Take Home the Gold?

With the Oscars quickly approaching, movie buffs are anxious to find out if their favorites will take home the gold. Here are some not-so-professional predictions for the ninetieth Academy Awards, which will air March 4 on ABC.

Best Picture
PREDICTED WINNER: The Shape of Water
After three wins at the 71st British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, The Shape of Water is sure to take home the most coveted award of the night. The film follows a mute woman and her budding friendship with a mysterious creature being held hostage in a lab. The plot thickens when government agents threaten the monster’s survival. The fact that the chilling drama did not win Best Picture at the BAFTAs could be a good sign for the film’s success at the Oscars, since the two award shows have rarely agreed on the same Best Picture winner.

Best Lead Actor
PREDICTED WINNER: Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour
The incomparable Gary Oldman’s passionate performance as Winston Churchill was nothing short of impressive in his new film, Darkest Hour. From the silicon jowls to the posh British accent, Oldman made himself a perfect contender for the title of Best Lead Actor.

Best Lead Actress
PREDICTED WINNER: Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird
Actress Saoirse Ronan had to ditch her heavy Irish accent in order to play a teenage Californian in the popular film, Lady Bird. The film explores the turbulent dynamic between a Sacramento mother and daughter overcoming their personal struggles. Ronan’s performance as Christine, or Lady Bird, tugs at the heart strings of the viewer, which should earn her this impressive title.

Best Supporting Actor
PREDICTED WINNER: Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project
Willem Dafoe plays Bobby, a hotel manager, in this extraordinary look at the innocence of childhood. The Florida Project follows the story of a young girl and her struggling mother over the course of a single summer just outside of Disney World. Many critics are saying this is Dafoe’s career best, hopefully earning him the award for Best Supporting Actor.

Best Supporting Actress
PREDICTED WINNER: Allison Janney in I, Tonya
Although Laurie Metcalf’s moving performance as a strong-willed mother in Lady Bird was certainly memorable, it is more than likely that Allison Janney will take home the crown for Best Supporting Actress for her role in I, Tonya. Janney plays the vicious and abusive mother of Tonya Harding in this telling film about one of the most notorious scandals in sports history.

Best Director
PREDICTED WINNER: Jordan Peele for Get Out
Although this wildly popular thriller has been snubbed in the Oscar nominations, this category could be where Jordan Peele’s terrifying screenplay gets the recognition it deserves. From the provocative racial backdrop to the perfectly executed visuals, this timely horror film has already made history.

Best Original Song
PREDICTED WINNER: “Mystery of Love” by Sufjan Stevens from Call Me By Your Name
In this coming-of-age drama set in northern Italy, Sufjan Stevens’s acoustic mastery and soft vocals provide the perfect backdrop to the 1980s landscape. The song explores the wonder and complexity of romance, making it the ideal representation of this highly-acclaimed film.

Best Original Score
PREDICTED WINNER: Star Wars: The Last Jedi by John Williams
Despite the controversy surrounding this latest installment of the Star Wars franchise, no one can deny that John Williams has outdone himself with the stunning score of the film. From the poignant sentiment halfway through “The Supremacy” to the invigorating intensity of “A New Alliance,” Williams has created some of his best work since The Empire Strikes Back, hopefully earning him the award for Best Original Score.

From intense horror flicks like Get Out to heartfelt dramas like Lady Bird, this year’s Oscars is sure to be one for the books. Make sure to tune in on March 4 to see Jimmy Kimmel host for one memorable night!
