Willenbrink, Strong Defense Lead Dominic Past Lutheran

Led by junior Josh Willenbrink, the boys varsity basketball squad prevailed with a 66-61 win over Lutheran St. Charles on Friday night. The Crusaders were able to capitalize on Lutheran’s mistakes late in the game to fight back from a six point deficit and eventually pull away for good, moving to 10-7 on the year.

Despite going 11 for 27 in their opportunities at the free throw line, St. Dominic used an aggressive full court press late in the game. The good defense allowed for the Crusaders to overcome small mistakes on offense, setting up steals that quickly led to points off of inbound passes. The energy of the Crusader faithful filled the building in anticipation once the boys gained momentum.

“It was definitely a good win, for sure. We were able to really play strong defense obviously and props to everyone for it. It was a strong team win,” said junior Ryan Foley.

Not only were the boys aggressive on defense, but their up-tempo play translated to offense as well. A fast-paced offense is a familiar sight under Coach Kevin Roberts, and Willenbrink benefited greatly from the scheme. Continuing his strong season, Willenbrink led the team with 26 points, accounting for almost 40% of the Crusaders’ points.

The boys look to continue their success as they host St. Mary’s in the Fallon Family Center on January 26 for what should be a great matchup.
