Experience is Key
The court is home for the St. Dominic basketball girls. With a stellar 6-2 start to their season, these ladies are ready to take on any competition.
It is not even January and the basketball girls already have a few wins under their belts. With the level of intensity and skill these ladies are competing with, it is shaping up to be a phenomenal season.
“We came out hot and we have only been improving. We are learning from our mistakes, correcting them and building off each game. We have set a great foundation for the rest of our season,” said senior Abby Benedict
“I feel very confident about the season so far. The team works with each other really well and we are great at communicating on and off the court. I think this year we will be able to win a district title and be successful in the season,” said senior Madison Miller.
On Monday, December 11, the girls fell to Notre Dame 39-34 in a tight game. Yesterday, they faced off Parkway North on top of their game. They fought hard the entire time, but the shots weren’t sinking. Sadly, the Crusaders fell short 46-38. However, this little setback is no match for these Crusaders.
“We learn from our mistakes but we don’t let it bring us down. Monday was the teams’ first loss… we came to practice the next day and worked hard, we didn’t dwell on one loss,” said Miller.
“We handle tough losses just as any passionate athlete would: bad. We don’t like to lose, but we assess our mistakes then we effectively correct them. Tough losses are always hard on the team, but they teach us lessons that only can improve our game in the future,” said Benedict.
For the basketball girls, losing only makes the wins sweeter. With lots of experience in their rear view mirror, these girls are destined to dominate the rest of the season.
“I think our season is going really well so far. We started off great, winning the Troy tournament which St. Dominic has not done in a while. Despite the loss the other night, I know that we will bounce back. I have a feeling that this season will be a memorable and a special one,” said senior Sam Zoellner.
“I am looking forward to time spent with my teammates the rest of the season. Whether it is on the bus, in the locker room or on the court, I know I’m going to cherish these memories forever,” said senior Ella Kasubke.
Most importantly, this team is tightly knit. No matter what is on the scoreboard, the basketball girls stick together. They will succeed the rest of the year with their bond that outlives any difficult game.
“What makes this team special is the bond we have with each other. Compared to my past three years on varsity, this team is the closest. The team chemistry we have off the court is evident on the court and it’s one of the reasons we have been successful this year,” said Kasubke.
“I am looking forward to bus rides and being in the locker room with my team. Some of the greatest memories are made here. I have a feeling this season will be special, so I cannot wait until districts time comes around,” said Zoellner.
The next time you can see the basketball ladies in action is during the IMO’s Pizza Christmas Tournament on Wednesday, December 27. With a team full of dedicated seniors, great coaches and passion for the game, you should watch out for the basketball girls!
