Basketball Boys Gearing Up for Tournament Success

The Crusaders opened up their first tournament of the year with a horrific loss to FZS. Thankfully, the little mistakes disappeared on Tuesday night as the boys bounced back with a huge win over host SCW.

The varsity boys’ basketball team faced tough adversity in their first game on Monday against Fort Zumwalt South with a 70-39 loss. Fortunately, they fought back on Tuesday for a win against host school St. Charles West 63-56.

The tournament kicked off Monday, December 4 against Fort Zumwalt South. In the game, we saw a fast-paced, steal oriented offense from the good guys. However, FZS took a commanding 40-20 lead behind a good shooting core with multiple big men playing in the paint, defeating the Crusaders 70-39.

St. Dominic played with the classic Coach Roberts fast-break offense. When moving that quickly up and down the court, it is easy to make small, fundamental mistakes. However, have faith in this team. After the minor hiccups got worked out, this steal-and-score team was fun one to watch in game two.

That game put a better result on the scoreboard and in the record column for the Crusaders. Dominic pulled off a 63-56 win over the host school of the tournament, St. Charles West.

“We never gave up during the game. They would go on a run and we would fight back to keep our lead. We played hard for all four quarters,” said senior Ben Mueller.

Despite losing the first game, it was apparent that the fight Mueller references was there against Fort Zumwalt South.

The boys play again this Friday in their final game of the tournament against CBC at 5:00pm at St. Charles West. St. Dominic’s final game of the tourney will take place Friday at 5:00pm against CBC.
