Spotify vs. Apple Music
Spotify and Apple Music have created a divide between music lovers everywhere. So, it’s time look at the pros and cons of each and determine which streaming service comes out on top.
Spotify offers a free plan, which you can only use with shuffle play, a plethora of ads and no offline listening. However, Spotify premium is completely ad-free and allows you to save as many songs as your heart desires, all with offline listening. Spotify is offering three months of premium now for $0.99 per month. After the honeymoon trial, the price spikes to $9.99 per month. If you happen to be 18 years old and enrolled in an accredited college, you can take advantage of Spotify’s student discount. They partnered with Hulu to offer a membership to Spotify premium alongside Hulu’s limited commercials all for the low price of $4.99.
Spotify offers a staggering 30,000,000 songs and unique ways to discover them. Aside from the standard search bar, there are a multitude of pre-made playlists for every mood, decade and activity. For example, Spotify’s new running feature detects your tempo and plays music to match. Also unique to Spotify is the discover weekly playlist, where Spotify curates a list of new songs based on your listening history.
Share playlists and check out what music your friends are listening to by connecting your account through Facebook. You can listen on your phone, computer, tablet, Xbox, Playstation or TV through chromecast, amazon fire products or samsung and android smart TVs. Spotify has stayed true to its roots by keeping its original classic black and neon green display, which operates with ease.
While Spotify has some great perks, there are a few drawbacks. Any iTunes downloads do not sync up with your Spotify account, but that can be fixed by re-saving the songs on Spotify. The Spotify app is not Siri friendly if you have an iPhone, and Spotify doesn’t quite match Apple’s song count. Additionally, some artists hold off releasing their music on Spotify. However, with major artists like Taylor Swift giving in, it shouldn’t be long before Spotify is back on par with Apple.
Apple offers the same prices as Spotify, excluding a completely free version. However, Apple does advertise three months free, so it might be worth checking it out. Apple’s student discount works the same way as Spotify, but unfortunately they are not partnered with Hulu or any other streaming service. Apple boasts a jaw-dropping 40,000,000 songs and creates daily playlists tailored to your taste. Apple Music is obviously integrated with iOS 11 and operates seamlessly. Like Spotify, Apple Music is also available on Android. The Apple Music app is on par with Apple’s clean, white aesthetic.
Apple Music may sound like a dream, but its availability does not reach that of Spotify. When it comes to TVs, you need the Apple TV box to mirror, unless you happen to have a Bluetooth sound system. The three month free trial is tempting, but that is the only time you can access all of Apple Music completely free. The organization and layout of the Apple Music app is also a common complaint from users.
You really can’t go wrong with Apple Music or Spotify. Both companies offer enough songs to keep you constantly on the hunt for the next big thing, and the sound quality is reported to be practically identical. However, Spotify edges out Apple Music by the skin of its teeth thanks to its easy-to-use layout, expanse of compatible devices and partnership with Hulu.

I’ve used Apple Music for 2 years, but just recently decided to check out Spotify Premium. Apple may have its perks, but unlike what others say, the quality available on Spotify is actually much better. The extreme quality option streams at 320kbps. Apple streams their music at only 256kbps. I think I’ll be slowly switching.
