Tragedy struck Las Vegas when a lone gunman began a rapid-fire barrage from his hotel room overlooking a Jason Aldean concert. The gunman took the lives of 58 people and injured 527. Because the death toll has risen over the last few days, it is now the deadliest mass shooting in American history. Many deaths occurred because the venue was packed with 22,000 people, creating a dangerous stampede after the gunfire started.

During the commotion, police located the 64-year-old gunman, Stephen Paddock, in his room on the 32 floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. After firing at security guards through the door, Paddock took his own life. Police reported finding at least 24 firearms, explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

There are currently no leads to help decipher a motive, but investigators are looking into his financial records. ISIS tried to claim responsibility but were dismissed by the F.B.I. due to a lack of evidence.

While the investigation continues, family and friends are now forced to mourn the unexpected deaths of their loved ones. Hospital staff is still working tirelessly to accommodate for all the injured. Many concert-goers who were not injured reached out to help. Taylor Winston, a 29- year-old marine veteran, was one of these courageous people. He loaded injured people into the bed of a truck and drove them to a local hospital. He made two trips before ambulances arrived on the scene.

As victims are being identified, heartbreak continues to grow. Teachers, nurses, veterans and off-duty police officers are just a few people who lost their lives. Sonny Melton was one of these brave people. He was a 29-year-old nurse out of Jackson, Tennessee, who died selflessly shielding his wife from gunfire at the concert.

Lisa Romero-Muniz attended the concert with her husband, Chris Muniz, for their wedding anniversary. Ms. Romero-Muniz was a mother of three and high school secretary from Gallup, New Mexico. Mr. Muniz bought tickets for her to make up for forgetting their anniversary last year. She lost her life in the shooting, and the entire community is reeling from the loss of this treasured woman.

These were just average people, who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. People from around the world are sending their condolences and prayers during this time of grief.
