Becoming Part of Your World

Seniors Sarah Bowen, Lauren Jennings and Megan Rossmann

Do you think the musical is only for future broadway stars? If so, you are quite wrong. Armed with zero experience and a very average signing voice, I joined the spring musical last year and don’t regret a single minute. This year’s musical, The Little Mermaid, which was performed April 6-9, was a highlight of my senior year.

There is a spot for everyone in the musical, whether its crew or cast. Several positions are available in crew including costume, makeup, stage and tech crew. In the cast, there are lead roles, chorus and everything in between. If you dream of being the shining star or prefer to dance in just a few scenes, then the musical is perfect for you.

New to the musical this year is senior Dominic Demerath, casted as Grimbsy, Prince Eric’s right hand man. He nailed the role, despite being inexperienced.

“I never thought about doing shows, but now I love being a part of it. It never hurts to try anything new because you may find out that you love something you never thought you would love,” said Demerath.

Seniors Lauren Basse, Jordan Jacobs and Dominic Demerath

Seniors Lauren Basse and Jordan Jacobs are also first time members of the chorus. Both girls were excited to be in the show for their last year. Senior year is full of lasts, but Basse and Jacobs were able to experience a first just before graduation.

“This is a new beginning for me and I encourage people to try new things their senior year, so they leave with no regrets,” said Jacobs.

“The musical is something I have always wanted to be a part of and I am so happy I finally auditioned. I hope new people try it their senior year because it will be one of the best memories to look back on,” said Basse.

Long-time seniors Lindsey Peters, Clayton Arnold, Brad Sievers and Sophie Kluba have been acting, dancing and singing through high school. Theater is a special mark in their high school experiences and they have all loved every minute spent on stage. They have been incredibly welcoming and helpful to everyone who is new to a show.

“Being involved in all four musicals has allowed me to grow tremendously and I have also loved watching other people grow and helping others who remind me of myself when I was younger,” said Peters.

“It has given me four different, unique families that I have gotten to know over the years. It took me out of my shell and allowed me to explore a different side of high school. It taught me the importance of cooperation and teamwork,” said Sievers.

Next year, dive into something new, it may take you under the sea or beyond your wildest dreams. Don’t wait until senior year to become involved because no matter your skill level or experience, it is an incredible memory to be in a musical.
